Just did our taxes today.  Wow - the loss of the personal deduction is huge!  What a screw job...

I've got all my data together and I've only delayed faxing it to my tax girl because I want to delay potential bad news.  I'm already feeling down because I can't deduct her fee this year.

Last year was bad for me healthwise.  Five operations and procedures and a caregiver from June to December of last year.  My problems began in April with an ambulance emergency visit to the hospital.  They assumed it was my gall bladder, but exploratory surgery discovered it was a perforated ulcer - I didn't even know I had an ulcer.  After many hours in surgery and re-positioning  of the top of the small intestine and repairing a hole in my stomach my surgeon said he could put three fingers through I was sent to recovery.  Stomach infections in recovery made them isolate me and IV me with antibiotics.  Twenty days later I was sent home with a wonderful caregiver.  Three weeks later during a regular office visit my family doctor detected a white blood cells count of four times normal.  I felt fine, but he sent me to emergency.  They ran tests and concluded this time it was my gall bladder.  They determined I was too weak for surgery so they put a draining tube in my gall bladder that I kept for five weeks and then they sent me home.  Six weeks later I was strong enough for the  three hole gall bladder removal surgery and I was sent home that day.  I figured since I had a caregiver I'd let him wheel chair me in for an eye checkup during my recovery.  My eye doctor suggested I have a consultation with the cataract surgeon.  Between discussing Blind Man's Bluff and my cataracts my new eye surgeon said confidently cataract surgery would improve my sight.  December 6th I had the right eye done, and on December 26th I had the left eye done - two fifteen minute operation and I was sent home two hours later after each.

The bonus good news was the last two operations for cataract surgery cost me a $490 total co-payment and was my best ever investment.  I went from 20-50 sight in both eyes to 20-20 in both.  Now I feel like I've got HD vision in both eyes, and coupled with Kaiser cleaning the wax out of my ears my vision and hearing have been rejuvenated beyond my wildest expectations.  I just wish I could do that with my whole body.

It was a difficult way to lose 35 lbs, but because of the weight loss and exercise my diabetes is temporarily under control without medication.

I just need to be able to deduct a lot of the cost of having a caregiver for six months.  That drained nearly 55K out of my savings account.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Gil I am truly sorry for your health and financial issues, but the main issue is that the billionaires of our country did not have a bad day (even though it may cost you dearly.)

Hey, I'm just thankful the doctors were able to do maintenance and repair on my old tired self.  It's like I had my had its 100K mile checkup.

I feel bad for the people that have had the health issues I had that have no health insurance and can't afford to be taken care of.

Wow Gil - quite the ordeal but it sounds like in the end, you are in a much better place (except financially) than prior!

Got my taxes completed and have received my refund. Smaller than last year but I had more cash in my pocket all year long. No complaints

Getting a refund/rebate also thanks to solar power. We're getting a little bit back each month also. Last month electric bill was $42.00. Saved over $100.00.

Bravo Zulu, Ralph! I would have thought that you would be the very last person to adopt solar power. Please tell us more about it such as what do you have hooked up to it, etc.

Steamboat, the whole house is on solar along with solar powered hot water heater and attic exhaust fan which is on a separate grid. Exhaust fan turns on at 80f and off at 70f.
you can have larger systems depending on your needs.
Satisfied with ours but be careful and READ the fine print before installing. Finance charges are really high so we just bought it without any financing. Some states have a rebate program. Again READ the fine print.
Will I recoup the cost? Probably not in my life span, but, it might help the kids/grandkids if they decide to live here.

No, no batteries. At night or no sun it shifts back to the regular electric grid. During daylight it shifts back and forth depending on our load. Extra power generated from solar goes back to the electric grid. I really don't see where we would generate enough to where the electric company would be paying us for power generated.
Federal tax refund this year is $6k+

Our Federal taxes are less for 2018.

Despite the $10k cap, the new standard deduction exceeds the itemized deductions.

Our NY State income taxes will remain as high as ever.

Our local town and school taxes are lower than average because I have a veteran's exemption.

"Our NY State income taxes will remain as high as ever. "

Message from your friends in Albany (and downstate) :  "F**k you very much!"

Message from your friends in Florida:  "Thank you very much for keeping the Amazon HQ out of Brooklyn, NY.  If it does go to Miami, we'll use the tax dollars to keep us from having  a state income tax for a lot more years!  Nice job you guys!"
