I always assumed it was from spending too much time in the engine room, and being teamed with a stern planesman (not Dozier) that lost the bubble most of the time when the Pickerel snorkeled. Surprise, surprise when I went in to Kaiser. I assumed I'd need a hearing aid, but the tech said you've got a build up of wax in your ears. Two week of a wax softener treatment at home and a visit to Kaiser to clean them out. I can't believe I have normal hearing, and coupled with cataract surgery two week ago my eyesight is 20-20 in the right and 20-25 in the left. Best $500 I ever spent on co-payments. I only wish I could buy more parts to replace my 73 year old parts.

He cleaned them out just fine with some sort of a vacuum but he softened the was with a 50-50 mixture of regular rubbing alcohol and white vinegar. He said the alcohol softened the wax, the vinegar restored the proper pH balance and they both dis-infected the ear canal. . He also said to get a diabetic insulin syringe from the druggist, and have them dispose of the needle. The syringe is the same size as the ear canal so the amount is right. Just lay on your side, fill the canal and let it soak for a few minutes. Then put a washcloth over the ear and sit up to let it drain. Do the same with the other ear. Worked for me.

I have had all the above treatments and my hearing is still going "south". Got hearing aids tuned to the best for both ears. Helps some with normal voices. Music sounds terrible and out of tune. Singing voices sound way off key. Listening to the radio is so aggravating and listening on the phone is something in the past. External speakers and caption phones help some. Spending my DB submarine service in the engine rooms and 30+ years driving and listening to the old trucks has taken its toll. The VA graciously has granted me a disability. Both my civilian audiologist and the VA Dr. say that my hearing follicals (sp) have died off. I also think that age has taken its toll for what lies between the ears Be thankful for what you've got cuz when it's gone it's gone. Edited by Ralph Luther 2019-01-09 5:42 AM

Master and Commander Posts: 1602 | Subject: RE: Happy Conclusion Ric, The home treatment only made them worse. As the wax was softened it plugged up the ears more. The roto rooter at the hospital took less than ten minutes and no co-payment. appointment necessary.

Solvent Drops to 'unstick' and then a warm water squeeze syringe to flush out. First kit I had bought had no syringe - problem worse. Syringe purchase and then use, I was amazed at the quantity of muck that came out. No wonder some insects like to lay their eggs in the upper ear.
