At random: In World War II the Germans lost 782 submarines, the Japanese lost 130, Great Britan and Commonwealth countries lost 88 subs, Russia lost 110 submarines and the United States lost only 52 submarines. Twenty-three of the Japanese subs lost were victims of the American Submarine Service.

Very nice - thank you.
Ford Island in name only. No longer going out the long way to salute the Arizona on final departure.

I know. Years before what is now the Kuahua Peninsula making the "outside" of the Submarine Base at Pearl was Kuahua Island. Just one more in a progression it seems that began in the 1020's.

Wasn't there talk of a bridge to Ford Island, hell maybe they all ready did that based on how current I am.

Another thing I always wondered about.  We went to Ford Island twice in my year and a half on the boat.  Once before Westpac for new torpedoes, and once to load three torpedoes to sink the USS Fessenden (DE-142) off Oahu.  We needed all three torpedoes to sink our target as the first two went under it, but I wonder why we got new torpedoes when we headed to Yoko - maybe to some that's obvious.  Our boat had been there the year before, and I don't know if they got new or overhauled torpedoes then.

Also I remember the recovery cable for the torpedo room hatches.  Once we left Pearl the water depth dropped like a cliff  deeper than our cable length and below crush depth.  I think they reported today they found one of our WWII boats off Oahu in 8000 feet.

When we worked on the deck as part of the Seaman Gang I always thought the local east cost and west coast waters gave you more of a chance to survive an accident than a boat operating around Oahu.  However I think boats are much easier to detect in Hawaiian waters.

Gil ~
The bridge was completed in 1998. It is named for a submariner, Adm Bernard Clarey.

Yes there is now bridge to Ford Island, The Hawaiians called it Mokuumeume Island later referred to by Americans as Fords Island and later shortened down to Ford Islands.

And, yes the USS S-28 was discovered a short time ago. She was lost on July 4, 1944. I posted this about that the other day on this board:

We always loaded fish in West Lock. Not sure why you went to Ford Island.

Thanks Rick,
I honestly don't remember hearing of West Loch before.  I know we were in Pearl around the same time - I'm sure you are correct.  Being in the Seaman Gang we helped the TM's with  the most of a day day effort.  How close is West Loch from the Arizona Memorial?

I know we didn't change every torpedo, but my foggy getting foggier memory seems to recall it took most of the day.

There are two guys on our Pickerel site from that time, maybe they can remind me where we went.

My memory can be dull but I believe we had to go to West Loch to load Subroc.

West Loch is about one mile south of Ford Island and a 140 degree turn to the right headed out. Warshots were shipped/unshipped there. Exercise were done at SubBase.

I can remember going to West Loch to load Astors back in the late 60's, but seem to remember loading warshots at the sub base. Memory is getting a little thin, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
ps. I was Weps on Gudgeon & Seadragon at the time.

On the Barbero, in the early 60's both torpedos and missiles were loaded pier side at the sub base for the 5 deployments I was on. Thought it was the same for the other missile boats, but wasn't around often when they deployed.

We loaded pier side for everything but WestPac, I believe even pier side when we got to sink the Fessenden.
