Pacific 12/06/75: The USS Haddock (SSN-621) develops a leak and floods during a deep dive
while on a test run near Hawaii. The U.S. Navy confirms the incident, but denies the vessel is
unsafe as crew members had charged in late October. A number of enlisted men had
protested sending the ship to sea, claiming it had cracks in the main cooling piping, leaks, and
malfunctions and deficiencies in other systems, including the steering mechanism. The
Navy replied that in accordance with strict safety procedures any problems are corrected
before the ship goes to sea.

Pacific 12/06/77: The USS Pintado (SSN-672) sustains damage to the top of its rudder in a
minor collision with a South Korean Navy ship during exercises off Korea. The Pintado
initiated emergency deep dive procedures when the surface ship turned toward the submarine at close range.

1917 A German submarine torpedoes the USS Jacob Jones DD61 off the coast of England.

I found the DD61 story interesting. My daughter-in-law had a great-great uncle who was USN Armed Guard on a cargo ship. He died when a U boat sank them in November 1917.

Here is a link to another 12-6 incident from WWI:

Lots of photos in the link.

Ric,

The U Boat site is a great web site. I found what I was looking for there:

Yep, been using it for years. I've talked with the folks there a bunch of times and even made some contributions to their data base.
