At random: The late Capt. Don Ulmer, USN SS (Ret.), and noted submarine author, began his military career by enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1947 and in 1949 while serving as an electrical technician E-4 aboard the submarine USS Clamagore, he was transferred to the Naval Academy. When he asked his commanding officer why he was being sent to Annapolis, the skipper replied, "I don't think you're smart enough to make E-5 and I need the bunk space." Ulmer graduated in 1954 and in 1967 returned to command Clamagore, possibly the only officer to command a U.S. warship having served on it as an enlisted man.

Some of you might realize I have been on the quest to find close up and detailed images of the Honolulu Harbor Light Station. Why a lighthouse you ask. Well, seems our submarines sailed in and out of Honolulu Harbor daily for a number years before moving to Pearl Harbor with the aid of this light. And, it was always mysteriously in the background of many of the photos. Now, no longer!

Many other Navy ships also sail safely due to that light. It was ultimately replaced by the Aloha Tower and even then its lantern was transferred to that tower so it was still keeping our ships safe. Well, enough. Thanks to the kindness of the folks at the US Lighthouse Society, the people who laid hands of the lines drawings for me, they have found the photos I have been seeking for about 5 years now. http://www.uslhs.org

The story isn't done but is close to it.

Enjoy

Ric, Hard to imagine our submarines being anywhere but in Pearl.  Is the harbor where the cruise ships use to or still dock?  My only recollection of this is from the movie From Here to Eternity, where Deborah Kerr and Donna Reed toss wreaths in the water as their ship is leaving Honolulu.
