Atlantic 09/20/77: The USS Ray (SSN-653) strikes the bottom south of Sardinia,Italy,
damaging its bow area. The Ray surfaces and proceeds to La Maddalena naval base on
Sardinia escorted by the USS Grayling (SSN-646).

I wonder if there is a tally on number of bottom-bounces by US submarines. I was aboard USS Grenadier in 1964 when she did a bottom bounce, shearing off sonar dome. Good for a couple months in Philadelphia Navel Shipyard.

Does not hurt to run the shallow water echo sounder. Very directional and high frequency - attenuation distance is short. A whole new meaning to 'things that go bump in the night.'

But, were you held accountable? Are you released from your vow of silence? Are you released to discuss it? Were you asleep in your rack at the time? Inquiring minds want to know. Some folks here may not know you BTDT.

Interesting point, the omerta vow of silence we all signed up to. Many books have been written by submariner's about the Cold War and I'm sure that at least some would have been borderline or even above that when it came to the Official Secrets Act, as we knew it. Must say I cannot recall anyone ever being charged or jailed over any violation or infringement of said Act in the UK. Is the same true of the United States? Our perception of it at the time was it was there to protect present and future submariner's which made common sense. Alternatively, was it all a gigantic scam to enforce our eternal silence? Just a thought that's all.
