At random: The Grampus and Pike were commissioned in ceremonies at Mare Island the same day, Thursday, the 28th of May 1903. A young naval officer, Lieutenant Arthur MacArthur III, older brother of General Douglas MacArthur, assumed command for both vessels at the same time.

In the early days of the web when modem rates were small, I scanned many images at smaller sizes to enable them to load faster.
Though I had had these 3 images of the USS H-8 at Redondo Beach, Calif on the page before I have rescanned them to a much higher detail and size. The subject matter is stunning as they were taken at Sunset with an off shore sea fog. I'd have loved to have seen these in color. It must have been gorgeous.

Enjoy!

I have no idea if you want to get into this or not but I am sure there is software available to make any pic into a color pic.
My Avatar was originally a sepia. A friend and former shipmate took the pic and made it color and even added a white hat to the pic. The avatar is one without white hat.
Let me know if you want me to pursue this with him.

Ron
It would be interesting to see what he could do. It couldn't be any worse than many of the hand colored pictures that were done 50 to 90 years ago. I think the last pic with the lumber schooner would be the most interesting.

I'll give him a growl to see if he still does this. I'll get back to you.

Thanks, no problem if he doesn't.
