CLAUS, Valentine, III, 91, of Downers Grove, IL, died June 18, 2017. He was born May 6, 1926. US Navy veteran of WWII; submarine service. Graduate of Downers Grove High School, class of 1944. Husband of 70 years of Marilyn, nee Kolzow; father of Christopher (Kathy), the late Nicholas (Susan Riley), Martha (Chuck) Martin, Matthew (Jackie and the late Mary), Andrew (Karin), Anthony (Carol), Amy (Robert) Myers, Adam (Jeannie), and Adrian (Mike) Litwin; grandfather of 26; great-grandfather of 9; brother of the late Louvalle Sterka, and the late Louise Claus. Visitation Tuesday, 3 - 9PM, at Knollcrest Funeral Home, 1500 S. Meyers Rd., Lombard (3 blks. S. of Roosevelt Rd.) Funeral Wednesday, 9:15 AM from the funeral home to St. Mary of Gostyn Church, Mass 10:00 AM. Interment Queen of Heaven Cemetery. SMITH, Gerald P. Jr., 74, of Scranton, died Saturday at Hospice of the Sacred Heart. His wife is Donna Travis Smith. The couple would have celebrated 46 years of marriage next month. Born in Scranton, son of the late Gerald "Bud" and Eileen Pope Smith, he was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. Before retirement, he was employed as an electrician at Chamberlain for 34 years. A Navy submarine veteran, he was a member of American Legion Post 675 for 48 years and the IAM Union for 35 years. Gerald was active with the Boy Scouts and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He enjoyed summers at "The Lake" and watching his grandson grow up. Also surviving are a son, Randy, Scranton; a daughter, Carolyn Otto and husband Charles, Dunmore; four grandchildren, Megan Smith, California; Gerald and Sean Smith, Washington; and Rhys Otto, Dunmore; a great-grandson, Jaydon Smith; a sister, Nadys Fahey and husband Joseph, Scranton; and uncles and cousins.e was preceded in death by a nephew, William Fahey. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the McGoff-Hughes Funeral Home Inc., 1401 Capouse Ave., Scranton. Interment, Fairview Memorial Park.
