GRIBBLE, Merton Henry, Jr., 92, passed away on May 17, 2017. He was born in Minneapolis, MN, on April 23, 1925. He joined the Navy in 1943, shortly before turning 18, and was schooled to become a submariner, serving in CSD-41(S-35), USS S-33, and the submarine tender USS Sperry in the Pacific Fleet. He was a Water Tender 3rd Class when released in April 1946. Mert moved to Marysville, WA, in 1967, with his family and worked in land development and building homes. Over his 60 year career he built over 2000 homes. He co-founded Frontier Bank, in Everett, WA, and owned Gribble Chevrolet in Ferndale, WA. He was a huge NFL and Mariners fan, enjoyed boating, owning Corvettes and traveling by car, motorcycle, train and cruises. Mert was a member of the American Legion. He was devoted to his family and was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy on January 9, 2015. They met at Beverly Hills High School and married in 1949. Mert is survived by his three children: Kathleen (Craig) Shepard, Denise Pearson, and Dale (Linda) Gribble; grandfather to ten, great-grandfather to 22. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on June 3, 2017, at Evergreen Funeral Home, 4504 Broadway, Everett. Memorial donations can be made to Providence Hospice whom along with the loving care at Lakeshore Manor, helped make the last weeks of his life very comfortable, following a recent diagnosis of Cancer. HICKSON, Charles William, 92, a lifelong resident of Framingham, MA, died May 19, 2017. Born November 14, 1924, he was the son of the late Charles Aloysius Hickson and Laura Louise (Stearns) Hickson. Husband of Jean E. (McGowan) Hickson, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage. Father of Kathleen A. Hickson of Nantucket, Michael C. Hickson of Marblehead, and Patricia M. Hickson of Hartford, CT. He was the brother of the late Josephine M. (Hickson) Sannicandro. After graduating from Framingham High School in 1942, Charlie enlisted in the US Navy and successfully completed four War Patrols (three successful) as an engineer on the submarine USS Segundo in the Pacific [R-10, CSD-122 RC, CSD-142 RC]. He served from 1943 to 1945. On the GI Bill, he attended Boston College, graduating in 1951 with a BA in Business. After teaching at the Gordon Street School in Framingham, in 1952 he was hired as assistant treasurer at the Framingham Cooperative Bank (now MutualOne Bank), where he embarked on a 54-year career. As a community-minded mortgage lender, Charlie earned a reputation for serving a generation of first-time home buyers and small business people, often judging them on their character over their qualifications on paper. He retired in 2006, after having served as President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman of the Board of Directors. He is memorialized by MutualOne Bank through the Charles W. Hickson Scholarship, established in 2015, which is awarded annually to a Framingham high school student headed for college. Visiting hours held on Tuesday, May 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Boyle Brothers Funeral Home, 173 Union Avenue in Framingham. A funeral Mass held on Wednesday, May 24, at 9 a.m. in St. Bridget's Church, 830 Worcester Road, Route 9 East, Framingham. Burial in St. Stephen's Cemetery, Fenwick St. Framingham. HINDE, James R., died May 08, 2017. Born in Sutherland, Sask. On December 04, 1932, Jim served in the RCN both as a "skimmer" and as a submariner, aboard HMCS GRILSE and RAINBOW. He then worked as an electronics technician in HMC Dockyard until retirement. Jim was a well-known Freemason, a life member of United Service Lodge No. 24, a 32deg member of the Scottish Rite and a Companion of the Royal Arch, Camosun Chapter #14, and many will have known him by his Shrine Clown Captain Hook character name of "Dandy". Jim is pre-deceased by wives Dorothea and Kathleen and son Bill, and is survived by former wives Lucille and Phyllis, children Bob, James Michael, Maureen (Ray), Ron (Paisley), Rick (Shawna), grandchildren BJ (short for Robert James), Matt, Brittany, Thomas, Josie, Millie, and great grandchildren Mylz, Faith and Emily and of course his two loving companions Moxie (Newfoundland) and Rosie (Springer Spaniel). Jim had expressed a desire for no remembrance formalities, preferring that all remember him at his best. HOWARD, Troy Lee, of Abilene, TX, passed away Tuesday May 16, 2017 in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was born July 21, 1947, to James A. and Ora Lee Howard of Macon, Georgia. Troy enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 17. He served as a Yeoman and Sonar Technician on the ballistic missile submarine USS George Washington Carver during the height of the cold war, patrolling the oceans and listening to sounds of mankind and nature. Upon completion of his service, he transferred to the US Navy Reserve and moved to Abilene in 1970. During and after his time in the Navy Reserve, he worked in Abilene as a carpenter, a real estate agent, an exterminator, and raised livestock on a small ranch in View. Troy accepted a commission in the Texas Army National Guard in 1978. He served as the HQ company commander of the 111th Engineer Battalion, rising to the rank of Major. He was appointed to the staff of the Adjutant General of Texas at Camp Mabry in Austin, where he assessed the readiness of Texas-based US personnel for deployment to the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm, and managed training directives and budgets for all reserve forces in Texas. He participated in briefings for the Joint Chiefs of Staff and two Presidents. He attended the US Army Engineer School, US Army War College, and graduated from the University of Texas as a Master of Business Administration. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Abilene, MOAA, and AOPA. His hobbies included flying his airplane, hunting, and fishing. He was a devoted husband to Mary E. "Beth" Howard, whom he married on May 24, 1968, at Tatnall Square Baptist Church in Macon. He is survived by his wife; his sons, Lee and wife Kimberly and Benjamin; brother John; sister Martha; three grandchildren, and five nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Phil. Visitation will be from 6:00PM to 8:00PM, Monday, May 22, 2017 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene. Graveside services will be 1:00PM, Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene. SMITH Stelman H., Rev. Dr., died May 17, 2017. Husband of Susan Irene Smith; father of Judith Anne McCowan, Michael Stelman Smith, Sr. and Valerie Ruth Morris; adoptive father of Vickie Lynn Losh and Rev. Jasina B. Wise; father-in-law of Lura McCowan, Carol Smith, Jeffery Morris and Jesse Losh; grandfather of eleven; great-grandfather of five. Rev. Dr. Smith served in the United States Navy Submarine Service, was a retired Sergeant with the Baltimore City Police Dept., Chaplain Emeritus of the Fraternal Order of Police State Lodge and Baltimore City Lodge 3, retired Director of Zion's Hill Ministries, Missionary to Africa and India, and retired Chaplain at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. He also authored two books. Family and Friends may honor Stelman's life at the Schimunek Funeral Home, Inc. (9705 Belair Road Nottingham, MD 21236) on Monday from 7-9 p.m. His Home Going will be celebrated at the Life Source International Church of God (7000 Rossville Blvd. Baltimore, MD 21237) on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends may visit an hour prior to the service. Stelman will be laid to rest to await the resurrection at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens (200 E. Padonia Rd. Timonium, MD 21093).
