EDWARDS, Frederick A., Jr, CAPT, USN, Ret., passed away on Monday, May 1, 2017, in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He was the son of the late Frederick A. Edwards and Bessie (McKichan) Edwards. Born in San Diego, California on July 27, 1926, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1950 and served for 27 years in shore and sea duty assignments, including commanding the submarine USS Torsk (SS-423) and the USS Rushmore (LSD-14). After retiring, Fred and Alice spent several years cruising the canals of Europe in their boat Magnum. They returned to Virginia Beach, Virginia, where Captain Edwards worked for a few years in real-estate. He then turned his life-long love of boats into an occupation, working as a Marine Surveyor. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Alice (Baumgardner) Edwards; and our children, Frederick Edwards (Sun), Christopher Edwards (Rebecca), Cynthia Docos (Brad), and Jennifer Tidd (Mark); 11 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. GOMEZ, Joe F., Jr., 74, passed away on May 6, 2017, at Wahiawa General Hospital, in Wahiawa, Hawai'i. He was born December 18, 1942, in Denver, Colorado, to Joe F. Gomez (Sr.) and Rose Mary (Cardenas) Gomez. Soon after graduating from Longmont High School in 1961, Joe began a very successful 30 year career in the U.S. Navy. He met his wife of 48 years, Yong Cha Kim Gomez, while stationed in Pusan, South Korea. Joe's naval career was highlighted by his rank of Chief of the Boat (COB) on the U.S.S. Cavalla and culminated as Master Chief Quartermaster (QMCM). Joe enjoyed spending time with friends and family and was an avid golfer. He was a member of the: Pearl City Elks Lodge No. 2669, Veterans of Foreign Wars, U.S. Submarine Veterans, American Legion, and Pearl Harbor-Honolulu Branch 46 Fleet Reserve Association. He was preceded in death by his parents Joe F. Gomez (Sr.) and Rose Mary (Cardenas) Gomez; and his brothers Billy and Dan. Joe is survived by his wife Yong Cha Kim Gomez of Aiea, Hawai'i; sister-in-law Grace E. Gomez of Longmont; nephew Dan Gomez, Jr. (Megan) also of Longmont; niece Christina Nelson (Jarrod) of Broomfield; great-nephew and great-nieces: Spencer Gomez, Olivia Gomez, and Ciarra Nelson; and numerous relatives in the extended Gomez and Muñoz families. Memorial services were held on May 11, 2017, at the Branch 46 Fleet Reserve Association, 891 Valkenburgh St, Honolulu, HI 96818. Private services will also be held, subsequently, to commit his remains to the Pacific Ocean with military honors, as he wished.
