The third of four sons Gordon was raised in Worcester and grew up hiking and exploring the woods of Central Massachusetts with his brothers. Don Simonson was one of a kind, as I suppose most of us are.

Don was in the commissioning crew of USS RAY. It turned out he had been ordered to the PCU without having sufficient obligated service (2 years) to remain aboard. So he went off to recruiting duty in Minneapolis by motorcycle with a half-dozen gerbils in a small cage in the saddlebags. He gave a hilarious report back to us on his arrival.

I gave him the duty of finding sound-shorts during construction. He turned in hundreds of "pink slips" in a week. The yard (NNS&DD) went nuts. Finally the CO and the yard reached a compromise. But I'll bet RAY was one of the quieter 637's.

Rest in Peace, Don. It was good to know you.
