Subject: Live Torpedo Firing

How many of you have actually been on board when a live torpedo was fired. We test fired one when I was on Gudgeon. It went out the tube but didn't run. It impacted the botton and exploded. We were aiming at the cliffs of Kaholawe, Hawaii. I was manning the sonar gear at the time and got to hear it explode.

November 1964 USS VOLADOR SS-490 fired a MK37-1 warshot, sinking USS SEA DEVIL SS-400 off San Diego. We heard the warhead detonate thru our pressure hull.

I don't recall wether we fired a wire guide or if it was an old Mk 14 for sure, but I think it was a wire.
