At random: Among the 'first' that Electric Boat Division has introduced into American submarines, have been the marine Diesel engine, the perfected use of the storage battery, the combination of battery and internal combustion engine, and the world's first adaptation of nuclear energy to propulsion in the USS NAUTILUS.

Anyone know which Submarine is at the Science Museum in Portland Oregon? My son just sent me a photo of it but it doesn't appear to have any numbers painted on the Sail
Thanks in Advance

Hi Doc, I looked at some photos of the Submarine. It has 581 painted on the sail. That number belongs to the USS Blueback. Barbel Class served 1959 to 1990.

I must have just missed seeing her at Pearl Harbor from '67 to late '68.  During most of that time the Barbel was home ported there, and the only Barbel class I ever saw in Oahu.  I never wanted to be on a Nuc after I reported to the Pickerel, but being on a Barbel class boat I think I would have enjoyed.

I served on her Nuc counterpart USS Skipjack SSN 585.
