| Great Sage of the Sea Posts: 897 | Subject: Kids Just sitting here contemplating childhood. Things have changed, drastically changed, in the way kids act and behave now compared to the 50's. When I was age 5 to 8 boys were noise with dirt on it. We were inquisitive. There was adventure waiting outside. We built roads in the dirt under a huge oak tree. Wood blocks were our imaginary trucks. We drew and cut guns out from the ends of peach crates. Oversized cucumbers became boats which we sailed in the cow tank. There was one old girls bicycle to share between 5 kids. Training wheels? We don't need no stinken training wheels, we got skinned knees. We went to the lake, by ourselves, and fished bullheads. I shot my first gun when I was seven. There wasn't a robin safe in our garden. I guess it goes without saying that burning ants with grandma's magnifying glass is no longer in vogue. Now, for the most part, it's helicopter parents. Tablets and phones make up a child's world. Yup, things have changed, and not for the better. Good luck trying to convince today's parent that though. | ||

When school was out, I had breakfast and was gone until the street lights came on. You had to use your imagination for so many things. Instead have having pristine sneakers as a goal, the dirtier your PF FLyers were, the better! Not so many Levi's with the knees worn out anymore. We had the industrial revolution and post-WWII wonder years. Now it's the middle of tech revolution for those in their formative years. Glad I grew up when I did....

Such was the young mind. Once living with my grandparents in Alabama (about 6) I was late for school. I had a 3/4 mile walk on a dirt road to the bus stop. My Mom kept yelling at me that if I was late, my grandfather would tan my hide. Came home that afternoon and at 5 pm, dinner time, my grandfather loked at me and said, "hear you almost missed the school bus." Response, yes sir but there is a reason. He said let's hear it. Well sir, I got halfway to the bus stop and there in the middle of the road was a hog nosed snake. I know about hog nosed snakes. They pretend to be dead and lay on their back to lure in prey. This afternoon when I came home he was gone. I waited for him to move but after a while I had to take a running leap over him or I'd miss the school bus. My grandfather said, "If your talking about that snake I ran over at 5 this morning, well..." A minute or so passed and I asked, if you ran over him why was he not there this afternoon. Answer, hawk, coon or something else took him away. Then my grandfather said, "Don't misss the school bus and by the way there are no hognosed snakes in the state of Alabama." Yep, dreams crushed. But childhood was fun. It was that adult part that kicked my butt.
