Raymond John Tortorigi, 73, of Preston, CT passed away on Monday, Oct. 30, 2012, at Chest Elm Rehabilitation Center in Moodus. He was born in Manchester, on Jan. 30, 1939. He was raised in Plainville and in 1952 was the youngest Boy Scout in Connecticut to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. After graduating from Plainville High School in 1956, Ray enlisted in the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country for 20 years in the submarine service. In 2007, he was inducted into the Holland Club, and exclusive group within the SUBVETS organization that recognizes members who reach the milestone of a minimum of 50 years qualified in submarines. Ray also volunteered his time as a Nautilus Museum docent. Ray had a big heart and could always be counted on to help a friend in need. He belonged to a Trivial Pursuit group for more than 20 years and was well known for his sense of humor. After retirement, Ray became a general contractor and was the CEO of RJT Builders, LLC. He enjoyed golfing as a member of the Pautipaug Country Club and spent quite a few winters golfing at the Navy Marine Golf Course in Honolulu, Hawaii. When he wasn't golfing or building homes, he could be found playing Texas Holdem at Foxwoods. Ray is survived by his wife, Patricia Reid; his daughter, Elayne Pons and husband, Daniel, of Gales Ferry; his son, John Tortorigi and his wife, Sheila, of Colchester; his daughter, SGM Amanda Baldwin and her husband, MAJ Tripp Baldwin of Fort Belvoir, Va.; a stepson, Kevin Reid and his wife, Leah; a stepdaughter, Nancy Carr and her husband, Michael; as well as eight grandchildren. A burial at sea will be held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 17, at the Historic Ship Nautilus, 1 Crystal Lake Road, Groton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ray's name may be made to USSVI-Groton Base, 40 School St., Groton, CT 06340. Dennis C. Schnell, 60, of Groton, formerly of Palmerton, Pa., passed away Oct. 28, 2012, at Hartford Hospital, waiting for a liver and kidney transplant. He was the son of Barbara Schnell of Palmerton and the late Clyde E. Schnell. Dennis graduated from the Palmerton High School in 1970 and joined the U.S. Naval Submarine Force during the Vietnam Era, serving on the USS Thomas Edison. Following his military service, he then became employed in civil service as a plumber, retiring after 30 years. Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., is assisting his family with services which are private. Published in The Day on November 2, 2012


John T. Topper Sr., of Bates Road Windsor, passed away on October 28, 2012 at the Berkshire Medical Center. John was born in Valpariso, Indiana on May 15, 1944, he was the son of William and Betsey Brush Topper. He attended Valpariso school and graduated from Valpariso High School. Upon Graduation he joined the Navy, serving aboard submarines and then the Navy Reserves, he retired in 1975. After service in the Navy he worked at G.E. Ordnance in Pittsfield for 30 years. He enjoyed fishing and fly tying, and Nature. His survivors include his wife Patricia Rockwell Topper whom he married on May 25, 1963, a son John and wife Annie of Dalton, two daughters Theresa Wimer and her husband Peter of Florida, Kathleen Robinson and her husband Nate of Pennsylvania, a sister Betty McGovern of Alabama, and nine Grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He was predeceased by two sisters Peggy Timmons and Donna Van Devire. A celebration of his life will held in Windsor in the spring at a time and a place to be announced. Rowland Freal passed away Saturday 27 October 2012 at his home in West Harrison, he was 87. Rowland was an electronics engineer at Teterboro Airport and served in the Naval Submarine Fleet during World War II. He eventually married his wife Evelyn (nee Wegman) on April 18, 1954 and spent the next 58 years together. Rowland is survived by Evelyn, his Wife and a Daughter-In-Law Dawn. Our friend and shipmate Richard D ‘Shorty’ Shelton, WWII Vet and member of SVWWII and USSVI received his final orders on Oct 30, 2012. His memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov 17th at Washelli-Evergreen, 11111 Aurora Ave N. in Seattle, starting at 12:00 noon. Sandra Conry (his daughter) asks that the subvets attending his service to please wear their subvet vests or other identifying marks as submariners.

Ray Tortorigi and I and some other young SO's at SubScol and afterward on boats on the river used to run around together and have fun in ways that were not always approved.

IgiRotRot (last name backwards) was a bunch of fun. Great memories.
