| At random: USS SKATE and USS SEADRAGON, after affecting a historic rendezvous under the ice, surfaced together at the North Pole through an opening in the ice on August 1962. What really happened: We didn't surface together, Skate surfaced first. Then we (Seadragon) fired yellow flares forward and aft so Skate could tell us how we were lined up. Remember, under-ice was primitive in these days. Skate called back down rapidly that one flare surfaced on her starboard side and the other to port. COMSUBBBS Posts: 2974 Location: Liverpool, England | Subject: RE: Shades of Operation Petticoat During WWII, the standard camouflage scheme for British submarines operating in the Mediterranean was light and dark green and some were even painted pink. The Special Air Service LRDGs (Long Range Desert Groups) in WWII painted their Chevrolet trucks and armoured Land Rovers pink for most effective camouflage. Well, at least that was their excuse , and who was going to argue with them? Submarines operating in the Gulf waters have displayed a khaki colour. In 1979 HMS Porpoise assumed the role of underwater weapons target. Her casing, ballast tanks and vents were strengthened so that unarmed torpedoes could be fired at her without fatal effect. However after decommissioning in 1982, it was decided Porpoise would be used for trials of the Spearfish Torpedo and for this role she was painted red. I'm sure the RN once carried out a series of trials in 1966 which established a pink/plum colour was the best possible 'camouflage' colour for a submerged boat.  In April 1991, two Oberon Class, Opossum and Otus were seen returning to HMS Dolphin painted shades of black and duck egg blue (Opossum shown above). This together with a Jolly Roger flag implied they had seen action in the Gulf War; however no official statement was given. Camouflage is more of an issue in these shallower and cleaner waters. In the summer of 1999 HMS Trenchant was spotted leaving Devonport sporting a blue camouflage scheme. The blue paint was applied directly to the acoustic tiles. She then underwent a series of recognition trials. Some more crap journalism from the 'Daily Wail' when it said that the Iranian boat would stand out like a sore thumb on the surface with its colour scheme – didn’t they realise they were reporting about a submarine FFS?
