I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

SALINAS .. .. .. James Peter Salinas, born April 27, 1936 in Los Angeles, CA. Died at his home in Sebastopol on October 26, 2008. Grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, one of 10 children; Member of the US Navy, Submarine Radioman – USS Rasher; Retired plumber and entrepreneur and business owner in Sebastopol. For many years, active volunteer in Sebastopol City Government, including Sebastopol Planning Commission and Sebastopol Chamber of Commerce. He was also a long time board member for the Sebastopol Sea Serpents swim team. (Sal) is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sue, and by his son Michael Salinas and his wife Connie, and his daughter Katy Salinas. He is remembered for the love of his grandchildren Brett Salinas, Julene Renee, Summer Motiska, Aura Glenn and her husband Oliver and grandson Terry Turchin. His greatest joy was for children. He was a wonderful “Papa” to his beloved great-grandchildren Zoe and Xander Renee, Olivia and Sophia Turchin. He is also survived by eight brothers and sisters.

FINE .. .. .. On February 24, 1982, Todd Blake Fine was born to Terry Lyn Fine and Joyce Nell (Ratchford) Fine in Ardmore. He passed from this life on August 2, 2026. His grandparents were the late Carl and Frances Fine and Homer and Emma Jean Ratchford. Todd began his formal education by attending kindergarten at Dougherty Elementary School and completed first through twelfth grades at Davis Public Schools. He also received an associate degree through the U.S. Navy. While serving in the Navy, he worked as an electronic technician for nine years aboard the USS Hartford submarine and served four years and three months as a recruiting officer. Todd received two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and the Recruiting Command Excellence Award with six Gold Wreaths.
Todd was very active in extracurricular activities while attending school. He participated in 4-H for five years and in FFA for four years, where he served as an officer for multiple years and as president during his senior year. He also earned the State FFA Degree. Todd was an excellent vocal student and was selected for the State FFA Chorus for two years and the Davis High School Executives for one year. Todd had many talents and worked for several contractors, performing construction, framing, plumbing, electrical work, and many other tasks. One of Todd’s favorite hobbies was working with cousin Wendel’s rodeo bulls. Together, they sorted and loaded the bulls onto trailers, transported them to bull-riding events, and enjoyed watching them perform. Born to Todd were two fine young men, Trenton Fine and Joshua Fine, whom he cherished deeply. In addition to his two sons, he is survived by his parents; three uncles, Steve Ratchford and wife Linda, Carl Ratchford and wife Debbie, and Rudy Fine and wife Lela; one aunt, Jan Smith; and numerous cousins. Todd was preceded in death by his grandparents and his uncle, Pat Fine.

THOMAS .. .. .. Mansfield - John Wesley Thomas, 89, of Mansfield, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026, at his home. John was born in Danville on Jan. 9, 1937, the son of Ross L. and Wynona M. (Ashmore) Thomas.
John is survived by his sister, Shirley (Gene) Highfill; nephew, Thomas (Jeanette) Alexander; nieces Pamella (Mark) Hudson, Lorri (Scott) Yeoward, Shelly Highfill, Chetina Underwood; great-nephews Jesse Alexander, Adam (Heather) Hardy, Nicholas (Suzanne) Wilkins, Dylan (Ashley) Whitehead; great-nieces Taylor Alexander, Tera (Jamie) Garrett, Cortney Highfill, Tiffany Murphy; great-great-nephews Brayden Garrett, Kamden Garrett, Preston Wilkins, Parker Wilkins, Deonta Hill, Jurrien Hill, Kiyre Murphy, Brendan Hubert; great-great-nieces Tinley Garrett, Iva Philbeck, Addilynn Hardy, Karleigh Hardy, Alivia Hardy, Scarlett Whitehead; special friends, Bob and Kristi Seaman, Jeremy (Aussie) Seaman, Jason (Colette) Seaman; and many friends including Ellis and Mollie Donley, Kendra and Eric Free, Kaylea and Benny Van Whye, Kelsie and Cody Briggs, and Quentin Donley.
John graduated from Danville High School, class of 1955. During high school, he joined the U.S. Naval Reserves and remained until 1956, when he joined the Navy. John retired from the Navy after 30 years, earning numerous ribbons and awards. He served on the Apollo 15 recovery ship and in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets, in Amphibious, Submarine, and Naval Air Forces. He also served in both National and NATO command while overseas in Naples, Italy. During his time in Naples, he took advantage of the opportunity and traveled to many European countries. John ended his career as a senior radioman instructor at Fleet Training Unit, Little Creek, Va.
After his military career, John worked for and retired from British Petroleum and then relocated to Illinois, where he worked for the Mahomet-Seymour School District.
In his spare time, John enjoyed supporting, attending, and photographing the Mahomet-Seymour High School and Parkland sports. He also loved to camp at his favorite campsite at Patoka Lake in Indiana Hoosier State Forest.

ROSS .. .. .. Ken Ross, 82 of Lakeport died in hospital in San Francisco on Sunday, October 19, 2008. Ken was born in Kelseyville, on May 26, 1926 to Joseph Joaquin Ross and Anna Santos Ross. He grew up on the Ross ranch outside of Finley with his four younger sisters. In 1961 he met his future wife, Alva, a young registered nurse from Illinois. They married and had three children who were also reared in Lake County. He was an alumnus of Clear Lake High School and Santa Rosa Junior College. Ken enlisted in the U.S. Navy at a young age, made the military his career, and served during World War II and the Korean War. He served on the USS Randall APA-224 and the USS Scamp SSN-588, a nuclear submarine. After naval service, Ken returned to Lake County and worked as a peace officer for over sixteen years in the Lake County Sheriff’s Department where he was affectionately known as “Doc”. Ken loved to laugh and was known for his wonderful sense of humor. He was an outdoorsman all of his life and greatly enjoyed fresh and salt water fishing, hunting, camping and golfing. A voracious reader, he had a fondness for spy novels, Native American history and military history. Ken was also an avid gardener and an accomplished chef. He is survived by Alva Ross of Lakeport; their three children, Jacquelyn, Maria and Joseph Ross; and his step-daughter, Debra Burak. He is also survived by sisters Leona Newman, Lois Thorne, Joanne Campbell and Judy Davidson. The family is deeply appreciative of the many friendships and kindnesses that sustained Ken over a long life well-lived.
