At random: The USS SKIPJACK was the first submarine designed from the keel up for top underwater performance using nuclear power. An earlier SKIPJACK was the first U.S. submarine to cross the Atlantic ocean under her own power (Newport, Rhode Island to Ponta Delgada, Azores, in 1917).

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate. 

VAUGHAN .. .. .. James Cleon Vaughan , 84, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2025. James was a Ham Radio Operator K4TXJ and proud Navy Submarine Veteran. Active in PRP Masonic Lodge and Kosair's Shriners.
He was born on November 28, 1940 in Louisville, Kentucky to Thomas and Mary (Livers) Vaughan. He is preceded in death by his Father, Thomas Homer Vaughan, Mother, Mary A Vaughan, and Grandson, Jason Anthony Vaughan.
James is survived by his loving Wife of 61 years, Marian Vaughan; Son, James T (Robin) Vaughan; Grandson, Matthew Ryan (Lindsay) Vaughan, as well as a host of Grandkids, Great-Grandkids, family, and friends to cherish his memory forever.
Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Thursday, July 17, 2025 at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Southwest Louisville Chapel, (10304 Dixie Hwy).

FLINT .. .. .. John (Doowhaashiidah) Howard Flint, 88, of Nashua, passed away peacefully on 28 June 2025. John, one of eight children, was born on November 14, 1936, in Boston, MA, to the late Ralph M. and Cathleen H. (Palmer) Flint.
John grew up in Medford, MA and graduated high school in Barre, VT. He served 21 years in the U.S. Navy as a medic and then a nuclear engineer spending the majority of his naval career on submarines. In private life, after earning his degree, John was employed by Babcock & Wilcox as a senior nuclear engineer, residing in many states as well as in Germany.
As an avid reader and curious thinker, John had a deep love for history and science. Even as his eyesight deteriorated, John kept up with science and technology using a Merlin Pro Enhanced Vision viewer and then listening to others read.
In his younger years, John was a golfer, skier, scuba diver, and Bruin fan. His time living with the Navajo and Apache’s documenting their history, music and dance, which was previously passed verbally generation to generation, and studying to become a medicine man were the most meaningful and rewarding experiences of his life.
John was a devoted son and sibling, always the first to offer assistance wherever and however it was needed. John was predeceased by his parents, sisters Cathleen (Flint) Zechner and Martha (Flint) Dougherty and his brother Ralph Quentin Flint.
John is survived by siblings Charlotte Flint and Sandra (Flint) Desharnais of Nashua, Lelah (Flint) Costello and her husband Edward of North Reading, Ma, and Louise Flint of Hollis. Also, 11 nieces and nephews.

JORDAN .. .. .. Douglas Glenn Jordan, 75 of Bostwick, passed away on July 8, 2025. Born in Chickamauga, GA on July 20, 1949, Doug was the son of the late, Kenton and Carolyn Mae Chambers Jordan. He grew up and was schooled in Chickamauga. Later, Doug joined the United States Navy. He served as a Navy Seal for 11 years. Much of his time in the Navy was stationed on submarines. Doug was an unapologetic patriot and loved his country. Following his Navy service, Doug worked as a concert sound engineer and attained a theology degree from Emory University and began his career in ministry. Doug served twenty-five years as a pastor. Most recently, retiring from Bostwick United Methodist. Doug was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a very proud grandfather and great grandfather. As a minister, Doug was committed to his Lord and his church family. As a friend, he was loyal and consistent.

Doug Jordan is survived by his wife, Betty. He also leaves his children, several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Also surviving are many other family members and friends.
