At random: Coronation ceremonies of Emperor Alexander II of Russia in 1855 were enlivened by a submarine concert. Wilhelm Bauer, a Bavarian inventor, took three musicians under the waters of Kronstadt Harbor in a submarine he had built, where they played appropriate music during the coronation. The music was distinctly heard on the surface.

The above link goes to the USSVI (United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.) Facebook page where their members who have gone on “Eternal Patrol” are noted.

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

MONASTERE .. .. .. Joseph James Monastere II, of Hammond, Louisiana, peacefully passed away on Monday, June 30, 2025, at the age of 59. He was born on Wednesday, August 4, 1965, in El Paso, Texas. Joseph was a veteran of the United States Navy and proudly served our country. He had a passion for being in the armed forces and his specialty was working on submarines.
Joseph is survived by his wife of 26 years, Marjorie Marie Domiano Monastere; stepchildren, Victoria Hering and Joanie Lee Rodgers; step-grandchildren, Gabrielle N. BRYANT .. .. .. Homer W. Bryant, 85, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away in his Carmel home July 6, 2025. He was born in Richmond County, Va., on October 2, 1939, the only child of Hazel Hunter Russell and Paul Revere Bryant. The Bryants moved from the northern neck of Virginia to Baltimore when Homer was just a young boy. He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic High School.
Master Chief Homer Bryant enlisted in the United States Navy in 1962 and was an honor graduate from boot camp in sunny San Diego. He then attended advanced technical training as a submarine nuclear missile technician, eventually rising to the exalted rank of Master Chief Petty Officer during the dark and foreboding days of the Cold War. Homer’s treasured submarine service time took him to duty stations around the world. He served five different nuclear submarines with deployments too numerous to recount. His selection as Chief of the Boat validated Homer’s quiet competence and leadership qualities. During his 25 years of honorable Naval service, Homer led several large submarine commands before retiring in 1987.
Homer was an avid reader and passed his love of the written word to his three children and grandchildren. He loved teaching his young grandsons about nature, God’s “critters,” engines, MGs, submarines, and space. He was particularly close to his first grandson, Turner. They would spend hours outside learning about bugs, birds, and the ocean.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley; children, Chris (Lisa) Bryant, Laura Bryant, and Carrie (Harold) Edwards; along with his grandchildren, Turner Ashby Edwards (Sara), Samuel Cooper Edwards, Grady Forrester Bryant, Thomas Logan Edwards, and Wade Hampton Edwards; and great-grandchildren, William Marshal Edwards and young Henry Wallace Edwards.
In addition to his parents, Homer was preceded in death by his first wife, Barrie.
Homer’s final resting place will be in the family plot at the Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery, Alfonso, Va.

BERG .. .. .. Erik Karl Berg Jr., of Ojo Caliente, NM,  passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2025, due to complications related to his multiple sclerosis. He passed just one month after his 64th birthday with his wife by his side.
Rick, as he was affectionately known, relocated from his birthplace in Wilmington, DE to Mount Vernon, WA where he spent much of his youth. Rick was a valued member of the Mount Vernon community. He was a varsity wrestler and played football for Mount Vernon High School. As a teenager and young adult Rick worked for Roosengaarde Farms, a family business that provided mentorship he deeply valued his entire life.
Rick’s life was marked by service, to his community, to his family, and to his country. A graduate of Western Washington University, Rick began his lifelong service to his community as a reserve officer for the La Conner Police Department. Rick then was commissioned in the U.S. Navy and rose to the rank of lieutenant where he served as a wartime submarine officer on the USS Portsmouth. Rick was awarded expeditionary medals and was cited for heroism during typhoon Omar on the island of Guam. Once leaving the military to return to Washington, Rick completed his MBA and finished out his service to his country as a senior contracting officer with the Veteran’s Administration, where he spent decades proudly working beside and advocating for veterans.
Rick will be remembered for his quick, dry wit and his knack for striking up a conversation with anyone, invariably sharing a funny and engaging story. He was a Renaissance man who had a wide variety of hobbies and interests which included rooting for his favorite baseball teams, model building, rifle shooting, sailing & boating of all types, coin and stamp collecting, as well as classic car restoration. In retirement, Rick found pleasure in bird watching, driving his track chair and Kubota outdoors, and traveling with his wife Robbie and their beloved dogs Charlie and Meja.
Family always came first for Rick. He was deeply devoted to his wife, his role as father and grandfather. Every member of Rick’s family was showered with his unwavering love and support.
Rick is survived and missed by his loving wife of 40 years, Robbie Berg, and his three children Kira (Nick) Wood, Erika (Chris) Lawson, and Dane Berg. He will forever be cherished by his five, soon to be six grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings and their families; Jeff with Kyle, Blake, and Emma; and Sue with Chad and Nicki. His memory will be held dear by his Aunt Linda Rybinski; his uncle’s John and Mike Berg; and countless friends and fellow veterans.
Rick was a longtime member of the American Legion, recently joining the post near his new home in New Mexico. He belonged to the Paralyzed Veterans of America and the VFW for many years and was a member of his local gun club.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Berg family home in New Mexico on the afternoon of Saturday, September 27, 2025, for his local friends and neighbors. In addition, a Memorial Service with full military honors will take place at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, WA on Monday, October 27, 2025, at 11:30 am.
