Legacy When Jerry DiLorenzo was sitting on his deck in Ocean City looking at the ocean and up toward the Atlantic City skyline he was at peace. And when Millie was next to him, then everything was complete. Jerry was generous to a fault and loved it when his family was at his home celebrating all of the great holidays. Jerry was born in Camden. He joined the Navy after graduating from Woodrow Wilson High. Jerry served aboard the USS Sea Owl (SS-405). He loved his time in the submarine service and may have served longer, but his growing family made him return home. Jerry was the owner of First Financial Resources - Gerald L. DiLorenzo Associates in Westville. Over the years, Jerry and Millie traveled extensively to Europe, the Caribbean and other destinations. Even though he was ill, Jerry and Millie were able to see Paris last Spring. Family Beloved husband of Millie E. (nee Cooker) Father of Jerry, Susan Young (Mark), Patrick & Louis. Son of Thelma DiLorenzo and the late Louis. Grandfather of David, Sammy, Cody, Natalie and Charles. Brother of Elaine Hamilton (Roger). Jerry was blessed with twelve nieces and nephews, and twenty-three grand nieces and grand nephews. Lee was born May 17, 1928, in Fayetteville, N.C., to Otho and Thelma Tew. Following a distinguished naval career in the USN Submarine Service, Lee worked for the U.S. Department of Energy, overseeing the construction of nuclear submarines at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. Lee became the Deputy Director/US Breeder Reactor Technology Program where one of the highlights of his tenure was his appointment as an advisor to the Congressional committee investigating the accident at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant. After his final retirement, he and his wife, Dorothy, moved to Smithfield, Va., in 1987 where he built their dream home. They enjoyed many years of traveling around the world. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and being with his family. He was a member of the South of the James Senior Golf Club. Lee was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy; his brother, John Tew; and sister-in-law, Bobbie Tew. He is survived by a son, John Tew (Alice) of Fairfax, Va.; daughters, Kathleen Haynes (Chris) of Hampton, Va., Eileen Milas (Kevin) of Kabul, Afghanistan and Noleen Burch (James) of Ruskin, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Amy Morris (Alvie), Chris Haynes (Paige), Amanda May (J.R.), Katie Smith (Tyson), Justin Tew, Matthew Milas, Sam Burch, Michael Burch (Amy) and James Burch. The lights of his life were his great-grandchildren, Greyson, Kendall, and Hannah Haynes, Ian and Audrey May, Edison and Anna Paige Morris, Sammy, Zachery, Anna Leigh, Kennedy and Josephine Burch. Also surviving are his brothers, Otho Tew Jr. (Alice) and Richard Tew (Ginny); and sisters, Joyce Smallwood (Stuart), Betty Scarborough (Quincy), Rebecca Peele (Bruce), Carol Giles (Joe), Mildred Melton (Chuck) Maxine Neidigh (Mike); sister in law, Ronnie Way; and brother-in-law, Roger Way. He will be fondly remembered by special friends, Rex and Joyce Williams, Doug and Betty Campbell and Tim and Lynn Milas. A service celebrating Lee's life will be held, Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Northampton Presbyterian Church, Hampton with the Rev. Don Neighbors officiating. The family will receive guests beginning at 10 a.m. A reception will follow the service in the church social hall. Interment with full military honors will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Albert G. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks. - (San Diego Union-Tribune) Harry Fischer, Jr., CAPT, USN Ret., a veteran of three wars passed away on January 12, 2010. He was 93 years old. Harry was born in Honesdale, PA. He entered the U.S. Naval Academy via fleet-wide competitive examinations after 14 months enlisted service, and graduated with the class of 1940. His initial assignment was signal officer of the heavy cruiser San Francisco based at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He was a junior officer of the watch on December 7th, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. On April 3, 1942, he was married to the former Florence Holland of Eastville, VA. Harry and Flossie, who survives him, were married 67 years. In October 1942, he attended submarine school and served in submarines for the remainder of World War II. He completed eight submarine war patrols in the USS Thresher and USS Spikefish which he commissioned as executive officer. Harry commanded three San Diego based ships: the submarine USS Ronquil, the destroyer USS Rogers, and the USS Saint Paul, the last Pacific Fleet all-gun heavy cruiser. He also commanded the USS Pollux, a Japan-based supply ship and Submarine Division 71 based in Pearl Harbor. Other duty assignments included the Bureau of Naval Personnel; Staff, Commander in Chief Pacific Fleet; Joint Staff Commander, U.S. forces Japan; Staff, U.S. Naval War College; Commander, Recruit Training Command, San Diego; and Commander, Naval Training Center, San Diego. Harry was a graduate of the U.S. Naval War College and held an MS degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. His decorations include the Silver Star medal, 3 Bronze Star medals, and the Navy Commendation medal, all with Combat "V." After retirement in July 1970, the Fischers settled in Coronado. His civilian pursuits included several years in real estate where he held a sales and broker's license. He was a "Free-Wheeler," a volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society, and for many years he coordinated the schedule of the Coronado drivers. For almost 30 years he was a member of the Coronado Men's Golf Club, a source of warm and happy memories. He attended Christ Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry and was an active and faithful parishioner until his death. A memorial service at 3 p.m. on Thursday, January 21, 2010, will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Coronado, where Harry's ashes will be interred in the Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to be made in his name, to the donor's charity of choice. | ||
