I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

LAURIN .. .. .. Roland A. Laurin Jr., 83, of Hatfield, passed away on Thursday July 23, 2026. He was born in Springfield on October 5, 1942, to the late Roland and Gertrude (Pratt) Laurin Sr. Roland was educated in Amherst Schools and was a graduate of Amherst Regional High School class of 1960.
After high school, Roland enlisted in the United States Navy, serving from 1964 to 1968. A proud veteran, he spent his service aboard a submarine. After returning home, he held various jobs, including 32 years as a custodian for the Town of Amherst school department.
He enjoyed watching trains, following all UMass sports, and traveling with his longtime companion and dear friend, Linda Nolet, who sadly passed away in 2024. Roland also cherished time spent with friends he made through the Hatfield Council on Aging.
He is survived his sister Theresa Merrero of Holyoke, several nieces and nephews, and his caregivers, Richard and Christine Jones of Chicopee.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Charles Laurin.

CLAYTOR .. .. .. Richard A. (Rick) Claytor of Rockville, Maryland died peacefully of natural causes at Ingleside King Farm in Rockville, MD on July 31, 2026. He was 98 years old.
He was born in Roanoke, Virginia on September 4, 1927 to William Graham Claytor and Gertrude (Boatwright) Claytor. Rick graduated from the Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1944. He then attended the United States Naval Academy and received a B. S. degree in the class of 1949 and retired from the Navy in 1973 with the rank of captain.
Rick spent the bulk of his active naval career working for the legendary Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, first as project officer for commissioned nuclear submarines, starting with the Navy's first two nuclear submarines, Nautilus and Seawolf, and later as technical manager of the Atomic Energy Commission's Pittsburgh Office overseeing nuclear ship design and development at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory. While at the Pittsburgh office, he also directed the program for quality control of materials and equipment to be installed in the Navy's nuclear submarines and surface ships. For his work in Pittsburgh, he was awarded the Legion of Merit by the Secretary of the Navy.
Following his Navy retirement, Rick spent several years in management positions with the architectural engineering firm of Burns and Roe of Oradell, New Jersey, specializing in commercial power plant design and construction.
In 1990, Rick was appointed by President George H.W. Bush as assistant secretary of energy for defense programs. In this position, he was responsible for the design, development, production, testing, and maintenance of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile. This latter position included oversight of the National Laboratories at Los Alamos, Livermore, and Sandia and the performance of nuclear weapons testing at the Nevada Test Site, the last such test having occurred, during his tenure, in September 1992.
Prior to reporting to Admiral Rickover, Rick served at sea in the aircraft carrier Leyte, which provided air support to U. S. ground forces fighting in Korea. For this action in the Korean War, Leyte was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation. Later he commanded a minesweeper in the Atlantic fleet. Following these tours at sea, he attended the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture, where he received graduate degrees in naval architecture and marine engineering in 1956.
Rick's outside interests included camping and backpacking around the country with family and friends and traveling worldwide with his late wife, Lee. More recently, he spent several weeks a year with his wife, Mary Louise, relaxing on beaches in North Carolina and Florida. He engaged in volunteer work for the Boy Scouts, the Episcopal Church, and mentoring of special education students at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville.
Rick is survived by his current wife, Mary Louise Kilmer Mahood, three children by his first wife, Gale McKinley (Rex) of Lynchburg VA, Douglas Claytor (Michele) of Frederick MD and Richard Claytor, Jr. (Donna) of Sandwich, MA; three grandchildren, Steven McKinley (Imelda), Ellie Gonzalez (Ryan), Hannah Claytor and two great grandchildren, Jonah and Talia Gonzalez. He is also survived by three stepdaughters, Kate Mahood (Victor Rodriquez), Sara Hampton (David), Beth Mahood (Stewart Andrews) and two step-grandchildren, Hanna and Duncan.
In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by his brothers, William Graham Claytor, Jr. and Robert B. Claytor.

CRESTO .. .. .. John Helmer Cresto went to be with the Lord, Monday, July 20, 2026.
He served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, enlisting as an E-1 Seaman Recruit and retiring as an O-3 Lieutenant. He served on Aircraft Carriers and then Submarines. He continued working in logistics for the next six years in eastern Connecticut.
He returned to the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley to attend Lewis-Clark State College and get a teaching degree, special education and reading endorsements. He worked at Sacajawea Junior High School in Lewiston for seven years and then went to Washtucna and Kahlotus for the next 10 years.
His hobbies were hunting, fishing and woodworking.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Beaulah Quigley, and adoptive parents, Ann and Hubert Copp. He is survived by his wife Mary Cresto, his four children Teri Surber (Tom), Tammy Powell (Jeff), Billie Jo Drake (Chris) and Dale Cresto; and 12 grandkids, 15 great-grandkids, two sisters Anna Rae Flerchinger (Ron) and Darlene Bland and many nieces and nephews.

McCRUMMEN .. .. .. MCCRUMMEN, Edwin Martin – On March 11, 2007 Ed went to be with his Lord and Savior at age 591/2 after a sudden massive heart attack. Preceded in death by his dad, Fred. His beloved family awaiting their heavenly reunion include his wife of 351/2 years, Jeanet; children, Ted, Stacie, Katie and Jason; grandchildren, Sidnee, Alana, Zachariah, Malakai, and Daniel; mom, Louise; sister, Renee; and brother, Mike. Ed lived in Sonoma County 43 years, 351/2 in Santa Rosa; graduate of Petaluma H.S. In the Navy, submarine service; 35 years in retail sales. Many knew and loved him.

PERLEWITZ .. .. .. Roger R. Perlewitz passed away on August 1, 2026, at the age of 88.Roger was the devoted husband of Erika "Gina" (née Gmelch) for 66 wonderful years. He was the loving father of Ralph Perlewitz and Jeff (Kathi) Perlewitz, and the proud grandfather of Erika K. Perlewitz. He was the dear brother of Susan (the late David) Della and Mark (Marijo) Perlewitz, and brother-in-law of Annemarie (the late Helmut) Ronge. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews, including Robert (Sherri) Ronge, Rick (Laura) Ronge, Christopher (Gina) Della, Sharon Della, Anne Marie Della, Margaret Osterman, Mark Perlewitz Jr., Michael Perlewitz, and Jennifer Perlewitz. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Ann Perlewitz, and by his brother Brian S. Perlewitz, who was killed during the Vietnam War. Roger attended Washington High School in Milwaukee before enlisting in the United States Navy in March 1955. After graduating from Submarine School in 1957, he joined the United States Army and was stationed in Germany, where he graduated from Airborne School and met the love of his life, Erika.
Following his military service, Roger earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He then began a distinguished 28-year career with the Mequon Police Department, rising to the rank of acting chief before retiring in 1989. He was also a proud graduate of the FBI National Academy, 104th Session. Roger had a lifelong love of the outdoors and especially enjoyed spending time at the family’s vacation home in Marinette County. An avid competitive shooter and bird hunter, he treasured time spent afield with his beloved dogs. He was also passionate about sharing his knowledge with others, teaching firearm safety and hunter education throughout Wisconsin.
