At random: The USS SKIPJACK was the first submarine designed from the keel up for top underwater performance using nuclear power. An earlier SKIPJACK was the first U.S. submarine to cross the Atlantic ocean under her own power (Newport, Rhode Island to Ponta Delgada, Azores, in 1917).

The above link goes to the USSVI (United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.) Facebook page where their members who have gone on “Eternal Patrol” are noted.

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

BARNES .. .. .. Manchester - Richard "Rick" Barnes (March 20, 1955 - March 5, 2026) passed away peacefully on March 5, from complications of COPD and pneumonia.

His career included the building of Bethel Hospital in Alaska, and along side his brother Mike worked at the Shemya Air Force Base in the Aleutian Islands. He also worked in Florida, North Carolina, and at the Philadelphia Shipyards. When he returned to New England, prior to his retirement Rick worked at Sullivan Mechanical Services in Wilmington, MA.

IVERSON .. .. .. Wallace (Wally) Marvin Iverson, 90 years young, formally from Lisbon and Minot died December 23rd at 1:35PM at the Veterans Hospital in Fargo.

They had 4 children, Nicole (Nikki), Steve, Tim and Scott, which were raised in Flaxton, Portal and Minot. Wally returned to Flaxton and opened a butcher shop and later went to Minneapolis for telegraphy schooling adn was hired out to the Soo Line Rail Road in 1949, spending most of his railroad days in Portal working as an agent and operator. While in Portal he was elected to the City Council, joined the Masonic Lodge, was Commander of the Legion, Captain of the fire department, assistant Boy Scout leader and other mischief he could find like driving the honey wagon and school bus. In 1973 Wally was promoted to Train Master in Minot, ND, where he spent the remainder of his career and retired in June 1985. A few fond family stories:Wally loved to trap and took sons Tim and Scott on the line where a skunk was in the trap. Scott wanted the skunk, so Wally tanned it. It smelled so bad he decided he would wash it at lunch when mom was not home. Well that night, mom was washing clothes and they came out smelling like skunk and had black/white hairs on them, and all hell broke loose.. Dad owned a baby bear, which got loose in Portal and was seen loose on a telephone pole and eventually was given to the Minot zoo, had numerous town barbecues including Porcupine which everyone didn\'t know what it was, one resident asked dad what it was and he said it is Tom Cat
To Wally, his family meant everything, he was the most kind and passionate father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was always "Wonderful", and full of love to everyone he came in contact with.
