At random: The late Capt. Don Ulmer, USN SS (Ret.), and noted submarine author, began his military career by enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1947 and in 1949 while serving as an electrical technician E-4 aboard the submarine USS Clamagore, he was transferred to the Naval Academy. When he asked his commanding officer why he was being sent to Annapolis, the skipper replied, "I don't think you're smart enough to make E-5 and I need the bunk space." Ulmer graduated in 1954 and in 1967 returned to command Clamagore, possibly the only officer to command a U.S. warship having served on it as an enlisted man.

The above link goes to the USSVI (United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.) Facebook page where their members who have gone on “Eternal Patrol” are noted.

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

Jon loved to spend time outdoors playing golf, hunting, fishing, boating or just simply hanging out on the patio for a BBQ. Jon loved his yearly hunting and fishing trips, during which Jeni would always complete a new remodel or construction project to surprise him upon his return. He loved going on fishing trips to lakes and rivers around Wisconsin and Minnesota and going to Canada for giant walleye and pike. Hunting was a passion that took him to Wyoming, Montana and Idaho on many trips for mule deer, antelope or elk.
