I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate. 

WHITE .. .. .. Thomas Livingston White, Jr., 87, of Manteo, North Carolina, died on November 24, 2025, at his home on Roanoke Island. Tom was born in Raleigh, North Carolina and was raised in Lumberton, North Carolina. He was a 1956 graduate of Lumberton High School.
Tom received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1960. While at Carolina he was in the Naval ROTC program, played in the band, and was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity. After college, Tom was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy, where he initially served on a destroyer and later on a submarine during his active duty. He was a graduate of the U.S. Naval Submarine School, where he later served as the school’s Assistant Director of the Basic Officers Department before leaving active service.
Tom was released from active service with the Navy in 1967 and transferred to the Naval Reserve when he entered law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his Juris Doctor degree in 1970. Tom practiced law in Manteo for forty-two years, initially with his uncle Martin Kellogg and others at the law firm later known as Kellogg, White, Evans & Gray. He later practiced law with the law firm of Hornthal, Riley, Ellis & Maland until he retired in 2012. In 1989, Tom retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve as a Captain.
Tom was an active Methodist and longtime member and Sunday school teacher at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church in Manteo. He was also an outstanding community leader. Tom was a longtime member and past President of the Manteo Rotary Club. He served as Chair and a member of the Board of Directors of the Dare County Airport Authority. Tom also served on the Boards of Directors of the Girl Scout Council of the Colonial Coast, the Sea & Sounds Arts Council (now Dare Arts), and the Friends of the Outer Banks History Center. He also served on the Board of Visitors of the UNC Institute for the Environment. In 1980, Tom served as President of the First Judicial District Bar.
Tom also served in several leadership positions with the Roanoke Island Historical Association, which produces “The Lost Colony” outdoor symphonic drama. He served on its Board of Directors for twenty years, including positions of General Counsel, Vice Chair, and Chair and Producer. Tom received the Association’s Morrison Award in 2002.
The Town of Nags Head recognized Tom in 2016 with the Lightkeeper Award and the Nags Header Award, which recognized his many contributions to the town, including his service as Town Attorney for three decades. Tom served as the first Town Attorney for the Town of Southern Shores and continued in that position for twenty-two years. He also served as attorney for the Dare County Board of Education for twenty-seven years.
Tom was very conscientious and always made himself available to help someone in need. He was a positive influence on his many friends, colleagues, co-workers, clients, and shipmates.


HOESCHEN .. .. .. Kevin E. Hoeschen, 72, of Murphy, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025, in a Chattanooga, Tenn., hospital following a prolonged illness.
He was a native of Milwaukee, Wis., and a 1971 graduate of St. Francis Brother School in Fon Du Lac, Wis.
Kevin then enlisted in the United States Navy, where he trained as a nuclear electronics technician and earned his submarine qualification. Over the course of his career, he served aboard five different submarines, two ballistic submarines and three fast attack submarines before retiring in 1994 as a Master Chief Petty Officer.
Following his Navy service, Kevin spent eight years working for Kokasi Semiconductor out of Portland, Ore., before finding his calling in water treatment. This work took him all around the world where he installed, trained and maintained water systems helping communities gain access to one of life's essential needs.
Kevin was an active member of Murphy American Legion Post 96 and Hayesville VFW Post 6812. He was also a member of Murphy Rotary Club, where he brought energy and kindness to everything he did. In 2024-25, Kevin was recognized by Murphy Rotary Club as the Spirit of Rotary.
His strength, humility and kindness inspire us all to serve a little better and smile a little more.
He was the son of the late Eugene B. and Irene Wollak Hoeschen. He was also preceded in death by a son, Jason E. Hoeschen.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Barbara Hoeschen; one son; Gregory M. Hoeschen and wife Jessica of Orlando, Fla.; one daughter; Rebecca M. Mills of Conway, S.C.; three grandchildren, Harper A. Hoeschen, Caroline R. Hoeschen and Logan E. Mills; brother, Gerard R. Hoeschen of Omaha, Neb.; and many dear friends and family.

BOONE .. .. .. James "Jim" Ernest Boone Jr., 93, passed away peacefully at his home on December 9, 2025. Jim was born May 8, 1932, in Roanoke, Virginia, to Hazel Hampton and James Ernest Boone, and was raised in Erwin, Tennessee.

A proud graduate of East Tennessee State University, Jim earned his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry in 1956 and was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He honorably served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean Police Action, with duty stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and later aboard the Sea Wolf submarine.

In 1957, Jim began his career as a medical technologist at Watson Clinic, where he worked for more than a decade. In 1968, he opened Boone Laboratories, serving as Medical Lab Director until his retirement in 1995.

Jim married the love of his life, Jean Lane Boone, with whom he shared 62 wonderful years. Together they raised two daughters, who were the pride of his life.

An avid outdoorsman, Jim found joy in hunting deer, turkey, and elk, and in fishing across Florida, Alaska, and Argentina. He and Jean enjoyed many years of doubles tennis together, and Jim especially loved playing golf-most of all in the mountains near his hometown of Erwin.

Deeply engaged in his community, Jim served on the Board of Trustees for Polk General Hospital and was President of the Citrus Center Kiwanis Club from 1974–75. A devoted FSU football fan, he also sponsored little league baseball at Peterson Park, where he proudly cheered for his grandsons.

Jim is survived by his daughters Jennifer Brinson and Jaime (Stan) Gottlieb; grandchildren Chase (Amanda) Brinson, Hunter (Kayla) Brinson, Lane Gottlieb, and Laurel Gottlieb; and five great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy.

After the passing of his cherished wife Jean, Jim was fortunate to find love again with Marguerite "Weetsie" Fletcher. They shared five happy years together before her passing in August.

WHITMER .. .. .. Thomas Edward Whitmer, 86, Topeka, Kansas passed away peacefully on December 10, 2025, at Stormont Vail Hospital with his family by his side. Born on February 7, 1939, in Arkansas City, Kansas to Albert and Inez Whitmer. He was a devoted husband to Trenna Delores Shields Whitmer for 58 years, they were married in 1967.

Thomas is survived by his wife; son, Joshua (Abby); daughters, Carrie (Shane) and Sherrie; grandchildren, Kerek, Abbey, Madi, Chase, and Paul; great-grandchildren, Ella, Paisleigh, Alaiya, Emelia, and Ryett. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Thomas graduated from Dorrance High School, located in Dorrance, Kansas in 1957. The highlight of his high school days was winning the State Basketball Championship during his senior year.

Thomas served in the United States Navy from 1958 to 1965 aboard the USS Sea Cat (diesel submarine) and the USS Seadragon (nuclear submarine). He was aboard the submarine that went to the North Pole for the first time ever. While at the pole, Thomas and the crew members played a game of baseball on the glaciers.

Thomas graduated from Washburn University in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science in Physics. While attending Washburn, he enjoyed the astronomy classes and spent many evenings in Crane Observatory looking at various galaxies, stars, and planets through the telescope.

Thomas joined the Kansas Army National Guard and served in the 137th Army Aviation Heavy Lift Helicopter Company from 1972 to 1989. He was a flight engineer on the CH-54 Sky Crane. While serving, one of their missions was to supply feed for cattle in Western Kansas during snowstorms.

Thomas worked for Blue Cross and Blue Shield for many years as a Systems Analyst where he eventually retired in 2002.

Some of his favorite hobbies included fishing on his pontoon boat at Lake Perry, hunting for pheasant in Western Kansas, and taking trips on his Honda Goldwing motorcycle.

Thomas was a true family man that loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. He enjoyed reminiscing about the old Navy days with his shipmates, and sharing those stories with friends, fellow veterans, and his family. He will be missed dearly by many.

MILLER .. .. .. Albert Varn Miller August 24, 1928 November 19, 2025 Albert Varn Miller, born on August 24, 1928 in Los Angeles, California, Albert spent his early years in Ukiah, CAa place that would shape his life in more ways than one. It was there that he met the love of his life, Ruth, beginning a partnership that would span more than seven decades. Albert and Ruth were married on a submarine base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, while Albert was proudly serving in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service. After completing his service, the couple returned to Ukiah in 1953. In 1958, Albert began a career with the California Highway Patrol, a position that led their growing family to new experiences across the state, including Upper Lake, Bakersfield, Glendale, and Palm Desert. Following his retirement, Albert and Ruth enjoyed new chapters of life together, living in Colorado, returning briefly to California, and ultimately settling in Henderson, Nevada, with their son Kent. After Kent’s passing from COPD in April 2025, the couple was lovingly cared for in their home by their granddaughter, Brianne Hidalgo, and her family. Albert was a devoted husband and father who cherished the simple joys of lifehome-cooked meals, woodworking, gardening, and the many special projects he lovingly crafted for Ruth and their children. In one final act of togetherness, Al (97) and Ruth (95) completed their 73-year earthly journey the same way they lived itside by side. Ruth passed away on November 18, and Albert followed her just 12 hours later on November 19. A story of enduring love and commitment. Albert was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence E. Miller and Cora Evelyn Miller; his brother, Eugene “Gene” Miller; his son, Kent Miller; and many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is survived by his son, Keith E. (Missy) Miller of Denver, CO; his daughter, Kimberlee D. Schloss of Marina, CA; and granddaughters Brianne E. (Homero) Hidalgo of Henderson and Riley Anne Schloss of Marina; and his great-grandchildren, Vivian Rose Hidalgo and Emerson Rey Hidalgo, both of Henderson.
