Master and Commander Posts: 1680 | Subject: Up Periscope I saw this om TCM and started watching. Nothing special, but I have a question. I the movie they switch to silent running. We did this often, mostly in drills. If I remember correctly that meant turning off all hydraulics, and switching to hand power. On our boat in the 60's it also meant turning off A/C. I forget if that meant confining yourself to the rack if off duty? Incidentally I don't know if this was common to all boats, but within fifteen minutes of securing A/C electrical shorts materialized throughout the boat. The guys said this was attributed to the tropical climate of Pearl even though we were submerged. Watching the movie was kind of interesting - they used the USS Tilefish, and even black and white sequences from other sub movies that were not in color. As they're 'rapidly' steaming toward the mission the boat is doing 15 knots on the surface - the Pickerel which is 9 feet longer than the Tilefish, and has 250 more tons of batteries could do 20 knots even without a shipyard scrapped clean hull. Another question as the boat is running out of oxygen Jim Garner returns from his mission the captain says to the ER start the engines. The boat supposedly has been underwater running out of air - would the Captain say that and the crew know its the motors, and not the engines. Another odd thing Alan Hale (senior) plays an Ensign that's been an Ensign for 15 years. What's more he skips a rank in his promotion. He gets promoted to Lt. - the same rank as Jim Garner who is also a commando.

Master and Commander Posts: 1471 | Subject: RE: Up Periscope On my two 598 class boast in the 60s we did what was called Ultra Quiet. The operations you mentioned all happened. To clarify, anyone not on watch was supposed to hit the rack. A few times when we initiated Ultra Quiet, in the North Atlantic, it wasn't a drill. The boat did get a tad hot with the A/C shut down and the cigarette smoke permeated a lot of spaces. Being an MT I wasn't aware if there were equipment malfunctions. Some of those real Ultra Quiet events lasted hours.
