I was watching "The Growler Story" on YouTube and noticed that the director was listed as John Ford, Rear Admiral, USNR, Retired.

Yes, that John Ford.

I looked it up and he stayed in the USNR after WWII and was activated again for Korea.

He was promoted from Captain to Rear Admiral on the day he retired from USNR.

Quite common. In Jr High School I had an Algebra teacher who was a retired Admiral. He had been a Captain and commanded some surface craft and been retired an Admiral.
