ATTAWAY, William Grady, 78, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2019 at his home in Marietta, Georgia. William "Bill" was born in Statesboro Georgia on August 30, 1940 to Joseph Grady Attaway and Louise Williams Attaway. Bill attended Statesboro elementary schools and graduated from Suwanee Military Academy in 1958. He was a graduate of Georgia Southern University and attended North Georgia Military College prior to joining the United States Navy. During his eight years in the Navy, Bill served on the commissioning crew of the USS Sam Rayburn and on the USS Baron Von Steuben, both Poseidon class nuclear missile submarines, as a nuclear code IT analyst during the cold war era. He went on to have a successful career as a mainframe programmer and computer analyst primarily working in the financial sector. He loved his work and continually strived to advance his knowledge through continuing education. He was a faithful member of Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church in Sandy Springs where he served in various volunteer capacities. Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years Pearl McArthur Attaway, daughter Margaret Attaway Smith (Michael Smith), and son Joseph Grady Attaway II (Mary Clark Attaway). He has three grandchildren: Julian Grady, Elinor Camille, and Lucy Speir Attaway. He was preceded in death by his sisters Ann Turner and June Tilman and survived by his sisters Jo Attaway Akins (Paul Akins), and Nancy Attaway Holloway. A memorial service will be held at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church in Sandy Springs, Georgia on Saturday January 19th at 1:00pm. A reception will follow the service. Gifts in memory of Bill may be made to Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church.
