DeMUN, Taylor Kent, CAPT, USN, Ret., 77, died in Bigfork, Montana after a brief illness on August 28, 2007. He was born December 13, 1929 in Louisiana, preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, LaVolla Mae, and is survived by his sister, Diana Blankenship of Bigfork and sons, Kory, Doug, and Eric, daughter, Nancy and 9 grandchildren. Captain DeMun graduated from the Oregon State University NROTC Program in 1952. Prior to entering the submarine service he served in Korea, participating in the battle of KOJO-DO. In 1954, his ship took part in the atomic bomb test at Eniwetok/Bikini Atolls and the subsequent re-location of the Marshallese people. He completed submarine school in 1956 and after a tour on a diesel submarine completed advanced nuclear power training in 1959. Captain De Mun served on POMODON, SCAMP, SNOOK, NATHAN HALE AND ANDREW JACKSON. He took part in five special missions and eight Polaris patrols (five in command). As Chief Engineer of SNOOK, he conducted the first operational test of the "sword" a system to minimize superstructure contamination from resin discharge at sea. Over his four year tour in command of the ANDREW JACKSON his ship had the highest officer retention rate in the submarine force, conducted the initial testing and first deployment of the BQR 15 towed sonar array and was one of the first ships to complete a refueling overhaul on schedule. As Training Officer of Submarine Squadron Eighteen, he originated crew training/qualification programs for reactor and nuclear weapon safe ty that resulted in a 100% operational safety board examination rate for the 20 submarine and submarine tender crews he trained. As Deputy Chief of Staff on COMSBLANT staff he oversaw the simultaneous introduction of the MK 48 torpedo and Poseidon Missile system into the Atlantic Fleet. Captain De Mun retired in 1978 and became the Exhibition Manager of the Seattle Trade Center. In 1983, he was nominated as the best convention service manager in the nation by Successful Meetings Magazine. He entered Marquis' Who's Who in the West in 1984. He retired again in 1989 and moved to Cannon Beach, Oregon, where he was active in county government and economic develop- ment. After his wife's death, he moved to Bigfork in 2006, and served as President of the Eagle Bend Homeowners Association. A Memorial Service will be held on September 29 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Bigfork. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Bigfork QRU, 810 Grand Ave., Bigfork, MT 59911. FRANTZ, Harry T., 82, Spring Township, died September 13, 2007, at 3 p.m. in his residence. He was the husband of Marcene M. (Dietrich) Frantz. Born in West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, he was a son of the late Titus W. and Kathryn (Machmer) Frantz. He was a 1943 graduate of Hamburg High School and a 1950 graduate of Kutztown State Teacher’s College with a bachelor’s degree in math. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the submarine service. Frantz taught math in Washington, N.J., for a year and then worked for the Social Security Administration in Wilmington, Del.; Geneva and Binghamton, both in New York; in Williamsport, and lastly as Social Security office manager in Reading, last working in 1997. He later worked at Berks County Senior Citizen Council as a consumer advocate and was later a volunteer for the senior citizen council. He was a member of Bausman Memorial United Church of Christ, Wyomissing. Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Steven P., husband of Leslie (Pallansch) Frantz, Falls Church, Va., and Barry L., husband of Clare (Irwin) Frantz, Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County; and a daughter, Louise A. (Frantz), wife of Robert M. Duncan, West Lawn. Other survivors include a brother, Kermit Frantz, Hamburg. There also are eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. in Leibensperger Funeral Homes Inc., Hamburg. Burial will follow in Red Church Cemetery, Orwigsburg. Viewing will be Sunday 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home. JOHNSON, Robert Jesse, 83, of Murray, Utah passed away on Tuesday September 11, 2007 at Murray Care Center. Robert was born August 18, 1924 to Alvah and Mary K Johnson in Salt Lake City, UT. Robert's life was dedicated to service to his family and others even until the very end. He enlisted in the Navy in 1941 at the age of 17, serving in the submarine service in World War II. He joined The Salt Lake City Police Department in 1947, but was recalled into the Navy Reserves for Military Police Duties during the Korean Conflict in 1950. He then returned to the Salt Lake Police Department and retired as Lieutenant in 1976. After retirement, he served for several years as the chief of police in Richfield and for 14 years as a LDS chaplain for the Salt Lake City Police Department, which gave him great happiness. He was a proud member of the United States Submarine Veterans and was a former President of the Utah Chapter. He was a member and past President of the Utah Peace Officers Assoc. He was one of seven children and was preceded in death by Laura, Donna, Anna and Ralph. He is survived by his sisters Frieda Fife and Darlene Zeh. He married Charlene Peck on September 13, 1990 in the Jordan River Temple and was sealed to her children Richard (Sheryl) Robbins, Gregory (deceased) and Ricene (deceased). He is also survived by his children Greg (Leola), Cal, Jan, Terri (John); nine grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren. All will miss him. A viewing for family and friends will be held at the Cottonwood 7th Ward building at 5565 S Neighbor Ln at 9:30 a.m.; his funeral service will start at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Mtn. Condolences may be sent to www.celeratinglife-ut.com ROWSON, Gardner Stewart, 39, of Canton, GA and West Palm Beach, FL, passed away September 5, 2007 at his West Palm Beach home. Gardner is survived by his wife, Tiffany L. Rowson; daughters, Asby Elizabeth Rowson; stepson, T. Hayes Arnold; mother, Leslie T. Rowson; father and stepmother, Walter Rowson III and Debbie S. Rowson; sisters, Morgan Shaughnessy Rowson and Whitney L. Cresci and brothers, Geoffrey Ryan Rowson and Carter B. Rowson. After attending the University of Georgia, Gardner served 15 years in the US Navy as a nuclear electrician in the submarine service. He served on the USS Maine, a missile sub, and a fast attack sub, the USS Charlotte. His last assignment was in Norfolk, VA where he was attached to an aircraft carrier, the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt. During his Naval outprocessing, he was recruited and hired by Rybovich Boat Builders in West Palm Beach as an electrician. He thoroughly enjoyed his job and the company up to the day he passed away. A memorial service will be held at North Point Community Church, Alpharetta, GA at 11:00 AM, Saturday the 15th of September 2007.
