What are the small white-faced one-per-cylinder gauges? Cylinder head temperature? Exhaust temperature?

Most of them seem to be pointing to something in the 800 (of something) range.

Good looking engines. For the FM dudes, the dome looking things are cylinder head covers (with two brass knobs). The gauges are readouts for thermocouples attached to the exhaust elbows.
Don't want to be too basic but the Fairbanks boys need some school housing from time to time.
Seriously, nice engine room.
POD, I assume this type of engine powered the Oberons???

POD,

Thanks for the post mate and the memories of what used to be my daily domain – the donk shop. I had lots of experience in the RN with diesels from the old straight 8’s on the A Class diesel electrics thumping away, to the screaming ASR range of supercharged V16 diesels of the Oberon boats. Luckily both these engine types can still be seen in preservation. The former on HMS Alliance at Gosport and the latter on HMS Ocelot at Chatham and HMS Onyx at Barrow. The ASR diesel certainly needed a lot of air on full tilt dive. A few minutes with the snort head below the surface and your ear drums were sitting on your shoulders. Those were the days……

I know that somewhere they are still building diesel boats so before anyone starts reminding me about the wonderful advancements of technology, remember a couple of things. Marine diesel engines 50 years ago and now:

1. Still go suck/squeeze/bang/blow.

2. Still go up and down and round and round.

The ASR1 was originally designed as a standby diesel generator for a hospital - it was then supercharged and put in a submarine.

And now for the Green Steam brigade who may be feeling a little missed out. have been cleaning our concrete patio and paths with 50/50 pool liquid chlorine and water. It does remove the mold and other crud very well - finish off with the blaster to rip into anything left. The chlorine smell is very pervasive; so for the greenies who are missing their battery dips, enjoy the memories or go get a sniff of chlorine.

Nope no wont to catch the smell of Chlorine, Chlorine to a Battery Electrician means you, your crew mates and your Submarine are probably in a world of hurt.

Saltwater in the people tank is bad ju ju, salt water in the Battery Tank is very very bad ju ju!
